Biochar dMRV

Biochar dMRV, built into your output line

BDV, Biochar Digital Verification, is three units on your output line, each setting one parameter. Together they record moisture, temperature and weight for every bag, giving your registry and verifier measured evidence of dry mass, the figure carbon removal credits are calculated on, and the packing temperature your carrier needs.

Activation

Buy one unit, or all three

Every unit ships BDV ready and does its own job standalone. When BMA, QCM and BBW are all on site, we commission them together: a calibration check, a check that BMA dry mass reconciles with BBW bag weights, and a packing-temperature test. Then BDV verification switches on.

BDV runs on Forged units only. Third-party equipment adds failure points the record cannot control.

The BDV record

On every bag

  • Bag ID and timestamp
  • Dry mass
  • Packing temperature
  • Bag weight
  • Batch, feedstock and lab sample link
  • Calibration status
BDV subscription

Calibration and reporting included

Automatic checks

The system checks its own instruments on a schedule and logs the result.

Scheduled recalibration

Sensors are kept in calibration without taking the line down.

Annual traceable calibration

One scheduled site visit a year with traceable reference standards.

Support

Remote support, with site attendance when the checks call for it.

Reports and exports

Batch and bag records exported for your registry, verifier and customers.

Software updates

Record formats kept in step with registry methodologies as they change.

Registry dMRV requirements

What Puro.earth and Isometric ask for, and how BDV records it

Biochar carbon removal is credited on dry mass. Both main biochar methodologies ask for dry mass batch by batch, with moisture measured alongside it, records that trace each batch to its end use, and calibrated instruments.

Puro.earth Biochar Methodology, Edition 2025 v.2

Approved 27 November 2025. Rule numbers as published.

RuleWhat it asks forHow BDV records it
6.1.2Total dry mass of eligible biochar determined at the production batch level.Dry mass is measured at BMA and assigned to each bag, so the batch is the bag.
6.1.3 (a)“The total wet mass is measured by scale for every batch (e.g. big bags, truckloads)”, combined with on-site moisture measurement.Dry mass is measured and fixed at BMA. Later water loss does not change dry mass. BBW bag weights are wet trade weights, and periodic lab samples confirm the link between them.
6.1.4 (c)In-line moisture sensors need a minimum accuracy of at least 2% and calibration to specification.Meets the ±2% requirement, with calibration certificates and scheduled recalibration.
3.5.40Batch records with a unique identifier, production date, feedstock type, production parameters, sample identifier and dry mass. Each bag record carries a unique ID, timestamp and dry mass; feedstock type and lab sample ID are entered against the batch.
3.5.41 / 3.6.1Production records linked downstream to records of biochar use, including the dry mass of each use batch.Bag IDs follow the bag from filling to dispatch, so use records point to the exact production record.
5.3.3An information system with time-stamped records, available to the auditor.Every reading is time-stamped and held in the cloud, with export for the audit.
10.5.5Measurement devices calibrated to within 5%, with calibration records available for verification.Calibration on a fixed schedule, with records held for the audit and status stamped on every bag record.
10.3Combined measurement uncertainty estimated for the removal result (about 95% confidence).Continuous measurement replaces grab sampling, so the uncertainty estimate rests on instrument data, not sampling assumptions.

Isometric Biochar Production and Storage, v1.3

Section numbers as published on the Isometric registry.

RuleWhat it asks forHow BDV records it
8.3.2.2“Dry weight is measured for every batch of biochar produced” and can be traced to the point of storage; “Moisture is measured for every batch.”Moisture and dry mass are measured at BMA for every batch and tied to the bag ID that goes into storage.
8.3.2.2Batches wetted to a consistent target moisture, with low variation between batches (SEM under 5%).Moisture is controlled to a set point, so batch-to-batch variation is controlled and recorded, not just measured.
8.3.2.2At least once every 10 production batches, three or more samples from one batch go for analysis.Sampled batches are flagged by ID, so lab results link to the exact bags they came from.
8.4 / 8.4.1Delivered mass from calibrated, legal-for-trade scales, with weigh records for each delivery. Each bag is weighed on trade-approved scales, giving a per-bag weight to set against delivery weigh tickets.
8.4.1 / 10.1.1.1.2Mass records and calibration records retained for at least five years after the monitoring period. The record is kept for five years or more, with calibration records alongside.

What BDV does not do

  • Verification itself. Your registry and verifier verify. BDV supplies the measured evidence they check.
  • Laboratory analysis. Organic carbon, H/Corg and contaminant tests are done by an accredited laboratory. BDV links the sample to the batch; it does not replace the test.
  • Reactor temperature. Pyrolysis temperature logging (for example Isometric 10.1.1.2) is measured at the reactor, not on the output line.
  • End-use evidence. Proof of application or storage sits with the project. BDV provides the bag ID and dry mass those records refer to.

Forged Innovation is not affiliated with, endorsed by or certified by Puro.earth or Isometric. Requirements are summarised or quoted from the public documents named above; your monitoring plan and your verifier decide what is accepted for your project.

Questions

What is biochar dMRV?

Digital measurement, reporting and verification: instruments at the point of production record the data registries credit biochar on, mainly dry mass, so every batch has a timestamped record an auditor can check.

Do I need all three units?

Each unit works on its own. BMA, QCM and BBW are each BDV ready, and BDV verification switches on once all three are commissioned together, because the record needs moisture, temperature and weight from one controlled line.

Does BDV verify my carbon credits?

No. Your registry and verifier do that. BDV gives them measured evidence: dry mass, moisture, packing temperature and bag ID for every bag, with calibration status attached.

Can it be added to my existing bagging or cooling equipment?

BDV verification runs on Forged BMA, QCM and BBW units only. Mixing third-party equipment adds failure points the record cannot control, so we do not activate it on other equipment.

How is calibration handled?

Calibration is maintained on a fixed schedule, with automatic checks and an annual traceable calibration included. The calibration status is stamped on every bag record.

How is it priced?

Units can be bought outright or hired on a fixed term, with a BDV subscription once verification is active. Prices are quoted to your throughput.
